STAGE 3
These slivers go to spinning machines that twist and stretch the cotton slivers, through each machine the threads get thinner and stronger as the tiny fibres come together into a fine filament, eventually becoming the cotton yarn.

STAGE 7
Denim cloth is stacked up to 100 layers thick and cut with high speed cutting machines into pieces needed for desired designs of jeans. A pair of blue jeans has many different places from which they are sewn, such as pockets, leg panels, waistbands and belt loops.

STAGE 1
Mature cotton is picked from fields, processed and baled then transported to a central sorting facility. The bales are sold to manufactures and take to ginning mills where the cotton is inspected and send to a carding machine via air suction.

STAGE 2
The carding machine has bent wire brushes called cards. This cleans the natural fibres from all foreign matter while disentangling, straightening and gathering the cotton threads into slivers.

STAGE 5
The yarn is then 'slashed', which means it is coated with sizing, a type of starchy substance which makes the threads stronger and easier to work with. The indigo and white yarn is then woven on large shuttle-less looms. Blue and white threads are packed together which form the warp and weft.

STAGE 9
Jeans then have to be finished and washed. They then go through finishing processes and then pressed in large pressing machines. After this the jeans are boxed according to style, colour and size and sent to the warehouse. From the warehouse the boxes of jeans are sent to stores.

STAGE 8
Pieces are sewn on the assembly line using industrial human-operated sewing machines. Each piece on the assembly line is assigned a specific function and does one job, all pieces eventually coming together and sewn into a pair of jeans.

STAGE 6
After it is woven, denim is ready for so-called finishing, which means it is brushed to remove loose threads and lint, as well as 'skewed' a process to prevent it from twisting and pre-shrinking.

STAGE 4
Some of this yarn is dyed with chemical synthesised indigo dye, the yarn will be dipped into the vat of dye and dried quickly. It is this layering of the indigo dye that creates the dark indigo colour as we know it.
